The school has gained an excellent reputation for its creative teaching and learning.
Each class teacher plans a broad and balanced curriculum for his/her children incorporating the Core subjects (maths, English, science and RE), Foundation subjects, Cross-curricular subjects such as Personal and Social Education, Health Education and Economic Awareness when appropriate. The school operates literacy and numeracy lessons for English and maths. Other subjects may be delivered over a 2 year cycle and/or as part of a topic.
The school endorses the need for children to become proficient in basic skills and has been awarded Quality Mark Status.
A variety of teaching methods are used within each class, eg whole class, group and individual teaching. Children are encouraged to develop independence in their learning and to work collaboratively with their peers. In the Infants all classes are of mixed ability and groupings within each class vary dependant on the work being undertaken. In the juniors some classes are vertically grouped. At times, however, children may work in year groups. In years 5 and 6 children are split into two groups for each year for literacy and numeracy. This ensures smaller groups in general and targets additional support where it is most needed. All children follow a common curriculum and will be encouraged to progress at their optimum rate.
Children with 'Special Educational Needs' are integrated within each class either fully or to the extent their special needs will allow. SEN children are usually supported by either teaching assistants and/or the school's Learning Support Co-ordinator.
